ÉcoPerformance — Recommissioning of building mechanical systems (RCx)
Cut energy bills by getting reimbursed for 75% of eligible recommissioning costs, up to $100,000 per building. This is a grant that pays you back after you pay the consultant first, so you must be approved before spending. Verified against the official source on July 2, 2026.

Check your fit →Is this for you?

- You are ready to optimize HVAC and lighting systems to cut energy use by at least 5% of your baseline consumption.
- You can commit to a 24-month project timeline and provide two annual monitoring reports for at least two years after implementation.
Probably not the right fit if
- Your building is new and was commissioned less than 3 years ago.
- You need funding for the Planning or Implementation phases, as these costs are explicitly excluded from this grant.
- You are located outside Quebec or your business is a residential property owner rather than a commercial or industrial enterprise.
How much you'd realistically get

What may be supported
- Optimizing existing HVAC systems in commercial buildings
- Upgrading lighting controls and systems in retail or office spaces
- Staff training on new energy-efficient mechanical systems

What's excluded or restricted

How BBN Labs helps
- BBN coordinates the funded investigation of your building's mechanical systems with qualified specialists, uncovering where your HVAC and lighting waste energy.
- BBN coordinates the specialist-led staff training the program's transfer phase supports, so your team keeps the savings the recommissioning finds.
- BBN sets up continuous energy performance monitoring for two years, guiding you through the application and deadlines so you do not lose the funding.
What to know before you count on it
- This is a cost-reimbursement grant, not an upfront payment; you pay the consultant first and get reimbursed after submitting reports and invoices.
- Only the Investigation phase and the combined Transfer + Continuous Monitoring phases are eligible; Planning and Implementation costs are excluded.
- You must hire an accredited RCx agent and submit a signed analysis description with your application.
- The grant is taxable income; ask your accountant how this affects your net savings.
What are your odds?
Selection is discretionary and competitive; projects that clearly demonstrate a 5% energy reduction potential and have strong documentation from accredited agents tend to succeed.
Frequently asked questions

Do I need to hire a specific consultant?
Yes. You must use an accredited RCx agent and submit a signed analysis description from them with your application.
When do I get paid?
In two installments. The first payment (75% of Investigation costs) comes after you submit the Investigation Report and invoices. The final payment comes after the Transfer Report and your commitment to continuous monitoring.
Is this grant taxable?

What you can combine it with
Check if your building has active Standard-Implementation agreements; if so, you must meet the additionality principle to qualify.
